This site is dedicated to communicating the primary teachings of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the primary text of Raja Yoga. It is split in to four sections, representing the four books of the Sutras:
1) Samadhi Pada, on contemplation
2) Sadhana Pada, on practice
3) Vibhuti Pada, on accomplishments
4) Kaivalya Pada, on absoluteness
The text contained within quotes are direct translations from the Sutras themselves whereas all other text outside of this page is excerpted from Swami Satchidananda's translation and discussion of the Yoga Sutras.
Traditionally, the word Yoga refers to Raja Yoga "Royal Union", which is the science of the mind. The goal of yoga is to uncover understanding about and eventually, completely master the mind.
Sutra, means "thread." Each sutra is the most pared down thread of meaning that a teacher can expound upon for greater understanding. So the Yoga Sutras are the essential teachings of the science of the mind.
May you come to understand your own mind more fully and find ultimate freedom.
